Two dates now belong together in Goanology: 1st November 2026 in Delhi, and 3rd November 2026 in Washington.
On 1st November, INDIA bloc filled muddy Ramlila Maidan against SIR and demanded CEC Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation, while the BJP government itself held a counter-march in Tilak Nagar on 1984. On 3rd November, American voters delivered what USA Today called an emphatic repudiation of Donald Trump’s second term – Democrats won control of both chambers of Congress by wide margins, flipping Senate seats in Texas, South Carolina, Kansas, Ohio and Iowa,the bastions Trump carried by double digits in 2024.
Trump had begged voters to “pretend I’m on the ballot.” They did. And he lost.
Modi, who has lost his halo in the wake of Vote Chori agitation, is watching the same anasemic process. The strong leader is being hollowed on both sides of the ocean. Anasemic analysis asks: what did Strong Leader have to stop meaning to become strong, and what is now returning to hollow him?
1. Ordinary Seme of Strong Leader:
Ordinary strong = one who can bear weight, decide, protect. In Konkani bollvont – strong. In American ruthlessly tough – cowboy who does not blink.
To become Strong Leader- Trump, Modi, Putin, Bolsonaro, Netanyahu – the word had to be hollowed three times:
a) Strong stopped meaning institution and started meaning person.
Ordinary democracy: institutions are strong – courts, EC, parliament, press. Strong leader hollows institutions into person. In US, Trump hollowed GOP, Supreme Court, Fox into MAGA. In India, Modi hollowed BJP, RSS, EC, media into Modi.
What is hollowed? That institution can say no to leader. Modi hai to mhunkin hai. When Trump said “I wasn’t on the ballot” after asking voters to pretend he was, he was hollowing his own responsibility. The leader who was everything becomes nothing when defeat comes.
b) Strong stopped meaning competent and started meaning cruel and ruthless.
Ordinary strong leader protects weak. Strong Leader in far-right semiotics protects us_by hurting ‘them’, an internal enemy. Trump: wall, deportation, war in Iran. Modi: Minorities, bulldozer, SIR deletions, 1984 counter-rally to hurt opposition.
To make cruelty = strength, one has to hollow out compassion as weakness. Daya becomes kamzori. Empathy becomes wokek.
Residue: In midterms, exit polls showed half of voters saw election as opportunity to rebuke president, and voters who went from Trump to Democrats felt misled by promise to lower costs. Cruelty did not lower egg price. Cruelty did not lower petrol price after Iran war sent fuel soaring. The stomach returned.
c) Strong stopped meaning future and started meaning past.
Trump’s MAGA: Make America Great Again. Modi’s Vishwaguru: Make India Great Again- Ram Rajya, Akhand Bharat. Strong leader promises future by restoring past. To do that, past must be hollowed of its pain – slavery, caste, colonization, Partition – and filled with promise of coming glory. Hindutopia.

2. The Midterm Hollowing:
Midterms 2026 are textbook anasemia. Democrats seized House and Senate, flipped 29 House seats and 7 Senate seats, holding 237 House and 54 Senate seats. Texas hadn’t elected Democrat to Senate since 1988; Kansas not since 1932. Democrats won five new governorships – Nevada, Texas, Iowa, Ohio, Georgia – while Republicans flipped none.
What was hollowed in Trump?
First, Trump stopped meaning winner. For a decade, Trump = winner even when he lost 2020. In 2026, he accepted results, telling NYT he was “absolutely willing” to accept. Winner hollowed into lame duck. White House had to post “PSA: Trump is still your president” on X. When one has to announce you are still president, one is already hollowed.
Second, MAGA stopped meaning majority and started meaning minority. In nearly all districts, Republican candidates received lower vote shares than Trump did in 2024. The chain of equivalence that made farmer in Iowa + tech bro in Austin + white suburban mom equivalent as MAGA broke. Farmer wanted cheap fertilizer, not Iran war. Mom wanted cheap groceries, not tariffs. The heterogeneous demands that were chained for Trump in 2024 chained against him in 2026. ee15
This is Enersto Laclau: empty signifier that empties when it can no longer suture demands. It reached a point of fatigue.
Third, Strong stopped meaning unaccountable. Democrats now can block legislation, launch investigations into Iran war, immigration enforcement, corruption, and thwart appointments. Strength becomes subject to investigation. The strong leader becomes defendant.
3. Far Right Impact: From Strong to Stranded:
Far right globally lived on mimesis: if Trump can do it, Modi can, Bolsonaro can, Meloni can. They borrowed each other’s hollowed words: fake news, urban Naxal, love jihad, woke, anti-national , demagi naxals.
When Trump hollows, far right loses its model. What happens?
a) Imitation becomes parody. Modi’s BJP by Nov 1 2026 copied Trump tactic: hold counter-rally, claim opposition rally is anti-national, blame history. But as we saw, government protesting like opposition hollows government itself. It becomes protester, not ruler.
b) Strong leader becomes lonely. Trump blamed Iran war, Vance blamed Iran war, but voters blamed cost of living. Far right always needs external enemy – Iran, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Muslim. When enemy causes inflation at home, enemy stops working. War that was supposed to show strength shows weakness.
c) The new empty signifier appears from below. In US, it was not centrist Democrat alone. It was Mamdani in NYC – 34-year-old, Muslim, socialist, first Muslim mayor, won with 50.4% against Cuomo’s 41.6% on platform of free buses, childcare, city-run groceries. In Virginia, Abigail Spanberger, former CIA officer, won by double digits. In New Jersey, Mikie Sherrill won. Heterogeneous chain against Trump found new names, not one name. Mamdani = affordability, Spanberger = competence, Talarico in Texas = Christian Democrat who sent earthquake through Texas.
Far right’s nightmare: opposition is not one strong leader, but many weak leaders who talk about price of onion, bus fare, rent. Strong leader cannot fight bus fare with a bulldozer.
4. Modi’s Halo: The Indian Midterm:
Modi has lost his halo in wake of Exam Chori and then Vote Chori agitation exactly as Trump lost his in midterms. Same anasemic chain:
Modi in 2014 = Vikas, empty signifier holding all hope.
Modi in 2026 = Vote Chori, empty signifier holding all blame. 13 crore thumbs cut through SIR, Eklavya’s thumb repeated.
-Opposition on Nov 1 did what Democrats did on Nov 3: made election itself the issue. Not policy, not Hindu-Muslim, but can you vote? That question hollows strong leader because strong leader needs vote to be strong, but if vote is stolen, strength is stolen.
Modi, like Trump, now says “I wasn’t on ballot” in Bihar? He campaigns, then distances. He blames 1984, like Trump blames Iran. Both blame past war to explain present defeat.
But residue returns: 97 Goans whose name deleted by centrally controlled software, Bihari migrant whose name deleted, Texas farmer whose fertilizer costly – all say same sentence in different languages: Strong leader made me weak.
Goanology Conclusion:
Goa knew strong leader hollowing in 1510 and 1961. Afonso de Albuquerque was strong leader who conquered Goa. By 1961, strong Portuguese Estado Novo said Goa was province, not colony. It hollowed colony into province. In one night, province fell because Goans knew it was colony.
Strong leader is always a province that calls itself nation. When people start calling it colony again – when American voter calls Trump presidency a war that raised prices, when Indian voter calls Modi government a vote thief – the province falls.
Midterms 2026 and Ramlila 2026 are not two events. They are one anasemic event: the world has learned to see through the hollowed strong leader.
The far right will not disappear. It will do what hollowed things do: it will try to fill itself with louder slogans, more war, more hate , more violence .But as Laclau warned, an empty signifier that needs to shout to stay full is already empty.
The next strong leader will not be strong. He will be the one who can fix bus fare, restore name on voter list, and put thumb back on ‘Eklavya’s hand’.
