The Mahabharata story is known: Eklavya, Nishada prince, not Brahmin or Kshatriya, learns archery by watching Dronacharya from forest. He becomes better than Arjuna. Drona, bound to make Arjuna best, asks guru-dakshina: your right thumb. Eklavya cuts it. Gives it. Cannot shoot again.
One thumb cut in forest. Today, in new India through SIR – Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls – 13 crore thumbs are cut, not by knife, but by deletion.
Anasemic analysis asks: what did angutha – thumb – have to stop meaning to become votable thumb, and what must be hollowed to cut 13 crore of them?
1. Ordinary Seme of Angutha:
In ordinary life, angutha is body, labour, grip. Eklavya’s thumb is not ornament. Without thumb, you cannot grip bow. In Hindi belt, angutha also means signature of illiterate – angutha chap.- thumb impression is law, property, identity. British colonial law made thumbprint proof of person.
When EVM came, thumb shifted to finger – ungli – inked index finger. Still, in common speech, vote = thumb. Apna angutha lagao = put your seal.
So thumb means three things together: skill to labour, seal to own, power to vote. To cut thumb is to cut all three.
2. First Hollowing: Drona to State.
Drona asks for thumb as guru-dakshina. Ordinary dakshina = thanks, voluntary, after learning. To make it extortion, Drona had to hollow out guru.
Guru ordinary = one who removes darkness. Drona in Mahabharata is already hollowed guru – he is employee of Hastinapur, paid to produce best Kshatriya archer, not best archer. To ask Eklavya’s thumb, Drona had to stop meaning guru and start meaning state’s trainer. He must protect monopoly of Kuru.
What is hollowed? That Eklavya never was his student. He learned from statue. So guru asks dakshina from non-student. That is pure extraction.
Anasemic residue: Eklavya still shoots, but with middle fingers, less effectively. Skill remains, but monopoly preserved. He is not killed, only made second class.
This is key for SIR.
3. Second Hollowing: SIR – Special Intensive Revision.
SIR ordinary seme in Election Commission manual: Intensive Revision = house to house verification to purify rolls, delete dead, add new. It is ordinary cleaning.
To make SIR mean mass disenfranchisement – 13 crore – what had to be hollowed?
a) Voter had to stop meaning citizen and start meaning suspect.
Ordinary voter = adult Indian resident, 18+, with address. To delete 13 crore, voter must be hollowed into suspect: “illegal Bangladeshi”, “Rohingya”, “doubtful”, “non-existent”, “migrant who doesn’t live here”. In Bihar SIR 2025-26, EC asked for proof of birth, parental birthplace for those born after 1987, documents many poor do not have. In Bengal, Assam, similar.
Like Eklavya: he was archer, but Drona re-classified him as Nishada, not eligible to be best. So his skill made suspect. SIR: person is living, voting for 20 years, but re-classified as doubtful, not eligible to be voter.
What is hollowed? Domicile. Let take a hypothetical example: A Bengali Muslim living in Dabolim, Goa for 15 years, working on boat, his children in Konkani school, is told “prove you are from here”. His residence hollowed into origin.
b) Purification had to stop meaning cleaning and start meaning cutting.
Ordinary purification = remove dead, add living. To get 13 crore deletions – mostly in Opposition ruled states, mostly Muslim, Dalit, Adivasi, migrant worker, as alleged by reports from The Hindu and Scroll in Oct-Nov 2026 – purification must be hollowed into purging.
Drona said: I purify Hastinapur lineage by cutting Eklavya’s thumb. EC says: We purify rolls by cutting names.
Residue: Just like Eklavya’s statue still stands in forest outside Gurugram, with thumb missing, the deleted voter’s Aadhaar still exists, his ration card still exists, his body still stands in queue, but thumb – right to press button – missing.
c) Dakshina had to stop meaning gift and start meaning compliance cost.
Eklavya cut his own thumb. Drona did not cut. That is violence perfected: victim cuts himself.
In SIR, voter is told: you must prove yourself. Bring 1987 birth proof, bring parental proof, link Aadhaar, go to hearing, bring BLO witness. If you fail, you delete yourself. State does not delete you, you fail to prove.
So 13 crore self-deletion is presented as voluntary: “they did not submit form”. Like Eklavya’s voluntary dakshina.
Goanology: What Goa Knows.
Goa knows this because Goa lived it. During Portuguese Recenseamento. Goan communidade holders were deleted from Tombo and made tenants. They had to prove with foral they owned land they tilled for 400 years. Many could not prove in Portuguese script. Land cut.
During 1961 to 2026, 97 seven Goan voters were deleted without any refrence to Goa election officer..

From One to Thirteen Crore:
Mahabharata needed one thumb cut to preserve one Arjuna’s supremacy.
India Today needs 13 crore thumbs cut to preserve one hegemony’s supremacy.
Logic identical, scale changed. Laclau would call it chain of equivalence: 13 crore different people – Tamil worker in Mumbai, Bengali Muslim in Delhi, 97 Goans, Bihari migrant in Punjab – all equivalent because all are made doubtful. One name – doubtful – chains them.
Anasemic residue that returns:
Eklavya, after cutting thumb, becomes legend. He is worshipped by Nishadas, Bhils, as god who sacrificed. His cut thumb becomes sacred, not shameful. Every child who is told story knows Drona was wrong.
Similarly, deleted voter with inkless finger becomes witness. In Bihar, after SIR deletions, people kept photocopy of deleted slip and said: mera angutha kaat diya. My thumb was cut. That phrase spreads. Thumb cut becomes political slogan, not bureaucratic deletion.
That is anasemia: what is hollowed out returns as story.
If India cuts 13 crore thumbs, it does not produce 13 crore armless subjects. It produces 13 crore Eklavyas who know who Drona is today.
