The Second Inquisition

The Inquisition, a grim chapter in human history, evokes images of torture, persecution, and intolerance. While the original Inquisition targeted perceived heretics, mainly christains and jews hiding as christians of that time, a disturbing parallel emerges in our days. The right-wing’s relentless attack on minorities and dissenting voices has earned the moniker “Second Inquisition.”

The Spanish Inquisition (1478-1834) and Portuguese Inquisition (1536-1821) were Catholic Church- based institutions aimed at rooting out heresy, and dissent. Jews, Muslims, Protestants, Catholics and alleged witches faced brutal persecution, and executions. This dark legacy left deep scars on human society.

Fast-forward to the present, and an unsettling pattern emerges. Right-wing extremism, often cloaked in nationalist and religious rhetoric, replicates the Inquisition’s toxic dynamics:

1. Targeting Minorities: The right-wing focuses on vulnerable groups, such as Muslims, immigrants, LGBTQ+ individuals, and racial minorities, labeling them as threats to national identity.
2. Intolerance and Bigotry: Hate speech, misinformation, and conspiracy theories fuel a climate of fear and hostility, echoing the Inquisition’s demonization of perceived enemies.
3. Surveillance and Control Governments and right-wing groups employ monitoring, profiling, and censorship to suppress dissent and “otherize” targeted communities.
4. Violence and Intimidation: Physical attacks, online harassment, and threats against minorities and dissenters mirror the Inquisition’s use of torture and coercion.
5. Ideological Purity: Right-wing ideologues demand conformity to their worldview, punishing those who deviate from their narrative.

Somes examples of the Second Inquisition

1. India’s Hindutva Movement: The BJP’s nationalist agenda has led to increased violence against Muslims, Christians, women and Dalits. Hindutva is thought to mirror Inquisition to some degree
2. Europe’s Far-Right Resurgence: Parties like the National Front (France) and Alternative for Germany (AfD) promote anti-immigrant, anti-Muslim rhetoric. Hence they to replicate the Spirit of Inquisition
3. United States’ White Nationalis: The Trump era saw a surge in white supremacist violence and xenophobic policies. It is also regarded as second Inquisition
4. Brazil’s Bolsonaro Regime: The far-right president’s rhetoric targets LGBTQ+ individuals, indigenous peoples, and left-wing activists.

To combat this alarming trend:

1. Promote Critical Thinking: Encourage media literacy, fact-checking, and nuanced understanding.
2. Foster Empathy and Solidarity: Support marginalized communities and amplify their voices.
3. Defend Human Rights: Advocate for constitutional protections and international human rights law.
4. Counter Hate Speech: Engage in respectful dialogue, report online harassment, and support anti-hate initiatives.

The Second Inquisition threatens the very fabric of our societies. By acknowledging the disturbing parallels between past and present, we can work towards a more inclusive, tolerant future.
