Godi in Hindi = lap. Godi Media = media sitting in lap of power. Not media reporting power. Media sitting in power’s lap, like child, like pet, like courtier.
It did not happen by banning newspapers. It happened by anasemia: each media word was hollowed, kept its shell, emptied, filled with opposite. When media is hollowed, democracy is hollowed into kakistocracy, because without media, no one sees thumb being cut.
1. Ordinary Seme of Media:
Ordinary media = madhyam, middle. Between people and power. Medium, mediator. In Konkani, madhyam is also the village drummer who stands in middle of mandd and announces gram sabha decision to all sides. He does not belong to landlord or labourer. He belongs to mandd.
Ordinary patrakar = one who writes patra, letter. Letter carries truth from one to other. Ordinary samachar = sam + achar, to walk together, to make equal.
To make media into Godi Media, madhyam had to stop meaning middle and start meaning lap.
2. First Hollowing: Patrakar to Anchor
Ordinary reporter: goes to field, sees, asks, returns with evidence. Takes time. Eats dust in Ramlila Maidan mud.
Anchor: sits in studio, in AC, shouts. Does not go to field. Field comes to studio as video clip, as tweet, as WhatsApp forward.
What was hollowed? Pair, feet. Reporter had feet. Anchor has chair. Godi Media is media without feet. It cannot walk to Hari Nagar or Tilak Nagar on 1st November 2026 to see two rallies. It sits in Noida studio and shows split screen: opposition rally = anarchy, government rally = tribute.
Anchor had to stop meaning one who holds and start meaning one who holds power’s hand. Anchor in English originally meant heavy iron that holds ship. In Godi Media, anchor holds ship of government from drifting. It does not let ship move to truth.
Residue: Libia Lobo Sardesai’s radio in Portuguese Goa . She had no studio. She had forest transmitter that moved every night to avoid police. She was reporter with feet. Godi Media is reporter without feet, with lap.
3. Second Hollowing: News to Noise
Ordinary news = nava, new. Something that happened, verified. Breaking news= new thing breaks old belief.
To make Godi Media, news had to stop meaning new and start meaning noise.
How? 9 pm debate: 8 people shouting, anchor shouting louder, no one listening. Topic decided at 6 pm in WhatsApp group of BJP IT cell: today, 1984, not SIR. Tomorrow, Mamdani is terrorist, not inflation. Next day, Rahul Gandhi is anti-Sikh, not Vote Chori.
What was hollowed? Silence. In ordinary newsroom, after report, there is silence to think. In Godi studio, silence is TRP death. Noise = TRP. TRP = advertisement. Advertisement = government advertisement + Ambani/Adani advertisement. So noise pays.
Noise needs enemy daily. One day Muslim, one day Christian missionary , one day Rahul, one day Mamdani. Enemy changes, noise stays.
Anasemic residue: On 3rd Nov 2026, US midterms, American media – even Fox – reported Trump lost. Indian Godi Media reported Trump lost because of Iran war, not because of cost. It hollowed American defeat into foreign policy, not people’s stomach. Because if it reported cost, Indian viewer would ask about Indian cost.
4. Third Hollowing: Truth to Narrative to Narrative Set Karna
Ordinary satya= tested. Godi satya = narrative set karna, to set narrative.
This phrase itself is anasemic. In 2014, BJP said “media sets narrative against us”. By 2026, media’s job is to set narrative forus.
How does setting work?
– Select: Show 1st Nov BJP rally in West Delhi as “Sikh tribute”. Do not show it was led by CM, Union Minister, with police protection. Show opposition rally as “50,000 only” per police, not 10 lakh per organizers. Selection is hollowing.
– Suppress: Do not show 13 crore deletions list. Do not show Eklavya’s thumb. Show only 1984 list. Suppression is hollowing.
– Shout: If opposition leader speaks, anchor shouts over him, then says “you see, he has no answer”. Shouting is hollowing of listening.
– Studio Justice:Anchor becomes judge. “Aaj, Rahul Gandhi doshi hai.” No court needed. Godi Media becomes court, police, EC all in one studio.
What was hollowed? Verification. Reporter earlier needed two sources. Anchor needs one WhatsApp forward.
5. Fourth Hollowing: Owner to Lapdog
Ordinary owner = businessman who owns press to make profit by selling truth. If he lies, people stop buying.
Godi owner had to stop meaning businessman and start meaning beneficiary.
Why? Media needs license, spectrum, government ads, ED not raiding. In 2014-2026, many media owners became MPs, Rajya Sabha, got mining, got 5G. NDTV sold, Zee in debt, Republic gets ads, Times Now gets adds
Owner does not need to be told to sit in lap. Lap is profitable. To sit in lap is to survive.
What was hollowed? Fear of reader. Earlier, editor feared reader will cancel subscription if he lies. Now editor fears owner will cancel job if he tells truth. Reader becomes audience, not citizen. Audience wants entertainment, not information.
Hence Godi Media does not report: it performs. It performs nationalism. Like Ram Lila performance in Ramlila Maidan – actors play Ram, audience claps. Godi Media plays Ram, government plays Ram, opposition plays Ravan. Performance every night.
6. Why Godi Media Is Kakistocracy’s Mouth:
Kakistocracy needs worst to rule. Worst cannot rule if media shows they are worst. So worst need media to show worst as best.
Example: SIR deletes names. Worst clerk deletes. Godi Media shows clerk as purifier. Opposition shows deletion. Godi Media shows opposition as anarchist. Result: worst clerk becomes hero, best voter becomes suspect.
Example: Trump loses midterms because cost rose. Worst policy fails. Godi Media says Trump lost because of Iran war, not cost. So Indian voter does not connect cost to Modi policy.
Godi Media is not just biased. Biased media still reports, but with angle. Godi Media does not report. It replaces reporting with lap-sitting.
Goanology parallel: Portuguese Boletim Oficial in Goa. It reported only Governor’s orders, not communidade grievances. Goans read it to know what government wanted them to think. They read O Heraldo in secret to know what happened. Today, Goans watch Godi Media to know what government wants them to think, and watch YouTube, Scroll, The Wire, local Gomantak Times to know what happened.
Residue That Returns: The Forest Radio
Anasemia says: what is hollowed returns.
Godi Media hollowed feet, silence, verification, fear of reader. But forest radio returns:
– In Bihar, during SIR, local YouTuber with phone filmed BLO deleting name. That video got 2 million views, more than 9 pm debate. Feet returned.
– In Ramlila, Youth Congress displayed long voter lists physically, not on screen. Paper returned.
– In US midterms, local newspaper in Texas reported Talarico win before Fox. Local returned.
– In Goa, Godi word itself is residue. People coined it. They did not accept “nationalist media”. They named lap. Naming is first step to un-hollowing.
Media hollowed into Godi Media is not end of media. It is end of studio media. New media is forest media – phone, mandd, communidade WhatsApp, small newspaper, independent documentary like Libby de Liberdade – where reporter still walks, still listens, still sits in middle, not in lap.
When media sits in lap, it cannot stand. When it stands in mandd, it can walk again.
