Nestled on the banks of the majestic Zuari River in Ponda taluka, North Goa, Borim stands as one of the most picturesque villages in the state. Often called “Bori” or “Bore,” this census town spans lush green landscapes, with rolling hills on three sides and the serene flow of the river embracing it from the other. The name itself evokes simplicity and nature—derived from “Bora,” the Indian berry (zizyphus), hinting at the abundance of such trees in ancient times. Some even trace its roots to “Badrigram,” a Sanskrit reference to the sacred berry, reflecting a deep connection to the land.

Borim boasts a rich heritage dating back to the 12th century Kadamba era, when Queen Kamaladevi built the historic Kamleshwar temple in Deulwada. The village is dotted with over fifty temples, including revered ones like the ancient Shiva temple of Siddeshwar atop Siddhanath Parvat—one of Goa’s highest peaks—offering breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. There is also the Suryanarayan temple, the spiritual Bhadrakuli Tollem lake believed to hold mystical powers, and charming chapels and the St. Francis Xavier Church that add to its harmonious blend of Hindu and Christian traditions. Traditional wards like Deulwada, Tolop, Azordem, Tishem, Tanshirem, Taribhat, Shirshirem, Avedem, Betki, and Kalmamol preserve the old-world Goan charm, where life moves at a gentle pace amid paddy fields, coconut groves, and quiet riverside paths.

What truly sets Borim apart is its people—warm, hospitable, and deeply rooted in community values. Locals often describe it as “Borem Munsiacho Ganv” (the village of good people), a place where neighbors look out for one another, festivals are celebrated with joy, and traditions are passed down generations. The villagers’ kindness, simple living, and strong sense of togetherness have long made Borim a peaceful haven, far removed from the hustle of coastal tourist spots.

Yet, in recent years, this idyllic village has faced an unwelcome intruder: the menace of drugs. Ganja cultivation, possession, and small-scale trafficking have crept into the community, affecting the youth and casting a shadow over its tranquility. Raids by police have uncovered hidden hydroponic setups and seizures of significant quantities of cannabis, signaling how even rural corners are not immune to the drug trade. Families worry about the future of their children, and the once-untroubled lanes now carry whispers of concern.

In response, a group of determined residents has stepped forward—the Zagrut Borikar Team (Awake Borim Team). This community initiative represents the fighting spirit of Borim’s people. Through meetings, public awareness efforts, and press conferences, they have boldly declared their mission to make Borim free of drugs, robbery, and related social evils. They rally neighbors, urge stronger vigilance, and work hand-in-hand with authorities to reclaim the village’s peace. Their efforts embody the resilience and unity that define Borim—ordinary citizens refusing to let external threats erode their beloved home.

Borim remains a beautiful testament to Goa’s soul: serene, spiritual, and community-driven. Its hills, river, temples, and kind-hearted residents continue to inspire. The Zagrut Borikar Team’s fight is a beacon of hope, proving that with collective resolve, the village can overcome this challenge and shine once more as the peaceful gem it has always been. In Borim, beauty and strength walk hand in hand, ready to safeguard their legacy for generations to come.
