Teacher’s Day arrives again, and after twenty six years in classrooms I find myself pausing longer than usual. The desks look familiar, the chalk dust still settles on my hands, yet the air itself has changed. Outside these walls a digitized world and artificial intelligence keep rewriting the map of knowledge. Inside, the learning community that inhabits this space asks for more than the methods I once trusted. I must teach myself to transgress, to step past the comfortable edges of what I know how to do.
For decades logic held the center. We sequenced lessons, tested comprehension, measured progress in neat steps. That order served us well when information arrived slowly and limited it’s excess. Now knowledge moves like weather. Students arrive already saturated with images, fragments, and instant answers. The classroom can no longer function as a simple delivery room for facts. It must become a place where new forms of attention are practiced, where knowledge is produced and learning is experienced rather than merely received.
Gregory Ulmer offers tools for this scenario. His idea of heuretics shifts the emphasis from interpretation to the making of methods. Instead of asking only what a text means, we ask what procedures it can generate for further thought. In the classroom, this means treating every lesson as an experiment in how knowledge can be produced under present conditions. The old curriculum remains useful, yet it must be opened so that students and teacher together invent the next step.
Ulmer’s mystory supplies another resource. It weaves personal memory, public history, and popular culture into a single pattern that reveals how an individual is already inscribed in larger forces. When students compose their own mystories, they discover that learning is never neutral. Their lives already carry theoretical weight. The classroom then becomes a site where those lives are read and rewritten, not as private confession but as collective inquiry with deep respect and freedom.
Roland Barthes spoke of the punctum, that detail in an image which pierces the viewer and refuses to stay in the background. Teaching now needs its own punctum. A single unexpected question, a silence that lasts too long, a student’s view that disrupts the plan: these moments wound the smooth surface of the lesson and force attention to what cannot be scheduled. In a world of endless data the punctum restores the capacity to be struck, to feel that something matters beyond utility.
All of this points toward resonance as a possible new mode of learning. Logic still organizes, compares, and concludes. Resonance works differently. It is the felt vibration that travels between speaker and listener, between text and body, between one life and another. When a class falls into shared silence after a powerful reading, or when a difficult idea suddenly lands and several faces change at once, resonance is present. Knowledge is no longer only transmitted; it is tuned.
We seem to be moving from logic to resonance not by abandoning reason but by enlarging it. Logic remains necessary for clarity and for the testing of claims. Resonance supplies the binding force that makes those claims matter in lived time. In the digitized and artificially intelligent landscape, pure logic risks becoming frictionless and therefore forgettable. Resonance restores friction, the slight resistance that lets learning take hold in the body and in memory.
After twenty six years I no longer believe the teacher’s task is to remain the most informed person in the room. The task is to keep the room itself alive as a learning space, to invent methods with the students, to honour the punctum when it appears, and to cultivate the conditions in which resonance can occur. On this Teacher’s Day that seems both the hardest and the most necessary work.
