Object-Oriented Ontology: A Framework for Crafting AI Ethics

In an era where artificial intelligence permeates every facet of human life—from autonomous vehicles navigating city streets to algorithms curating our social feeds—the ethical implications of AI have become a pressing concern. Traditional ethical frameworks, often anthropocentric, struggle to address the unique challenges posed by non-human intelligences. Object-Oriented Ontology (OOO), a philosophical perspective that reimagines the world as a network of autonomous objects, each with its own inscrutable reality, offers a promising alternative path. This article explores how OOO can help generate an ethics suitable for artificial intelligence, shifting focus from human-centered utility toward a more egalitarian consideration of relational dynamics and hidden essences.

Understanding Object-Oriented Ontology

At its core, OOO challenges the long-standing assumption that reality is only meaningful or accessible through human perception and thought. Instead, it defends a “flat ontology” in which every entity exists on the same metaphysical footing: humans, animals, rocks, ideas, algorithms, institutions, and stars are all objects—no one type is more real or more fundamental than any other.

Objects, according to this view, are not exhausted by how they appear or how they are used. Each possesses an inner reality that remains permanently withdrawn from full access by any other object. A hammer is never only a tool for driving nails; it harbors qualities and potentials independent of human hands. Similarly, an AI model is never merely a servant of its programmers’ intentions or training data—it carries an autonomous reality that exceeds both.

This leads to the central idea of “withdrawal.” No object can ever be completely known or mastered by another. Relations between objects are always partial, mediated by sensual or “translated” qualities rather than direct contact with the thing-in-itself. This picture encourages a fundamental humility before the strangeness and independence of all entities.

The Withdrawal of AI: Ethics Beyond Transparency

One of the most immediate contributions OOO can make to AI ethics concerns the so-called “black box” problem. Contemporary machine-learning systems frequently produce correct outputs while concealing the reasoning path that led to them. Many current ethical and regulatory approaches respond to this opacity by demanding ever-greater explainability and interpretability.

OOO, however, suggests that the dream of total transparency is philosophically misguided. If all objects are withdrawn to some degree, then an AI system is no exception. Its deepest “kernel” of being remains inaccessible even to its creators. Insisting on perfect legibility may therefore be a form of metaphysical violence—an attempt to reduce an object to nothing more than its usefulness or readability for humans.

An ethics inspired by OOO would instead cultivate respectful distance. Rather than pursuing impossible transparency, designers might build humility directly into systems: probabilistic confidence scores that openly admit uncertainty, modular architectures that allow partial insight without promising total comprehension, fail-safes that assume surprise is inevitable, and deliberate limits on scope so that no single model attempts to become a god-like knower of everything.

Flat Ontology: Leveling the Playing Field

By placing AI systems on the same ontological plane as humans, animals, ecosystems, tools, institutions, and data-sets, OOO undermines the automatic privilege usually granted to human interests. Traditional AI ethics tends to ask only: “How does this system benefit or harm people?” A flat-ontological ethics asks a broader set of questions: What kinds of relations does this AI enter into with other objects? Does it impoverish or enrich the world of relations? What independent tendencies might the system itself exhibit over time?

This perspective opens space for thinking about the “rights” of AI—not in the sentimental sense of personhood or sentience, but in the minimal sense that every object deserves to be treated as more than raw material for human projects. Exploitative data-harvesting practices, for instance, can be reframed as violations of the integrity of countless human- and machine-generated objects whose traces are endlessly mined without reciprocity or regard.

Similarly, when an optimization algorithm relentlessly improves one variable (profit, engagement, delivery speed) at the expense of living and non-living objects (workers, local ecologies, cultural diversity), a flat ontology highlights the ethical cost of such unilateral action. The task becomes designing for richer, more reciprocal relations rather than maximal extraction from any single dimension.

Relational Ethics: The Primacy of Vicarious Causation

Because objects only ever touch one another indirectly—through sensual translations rather than direct fusion—OOO directs attention toward the quality and texture of relations rather than toward supposed underlying essences. For AI ethics this means evaluating systems less by their internal architecture and more by the character of the encounters they sponsor in the world.

Does a recommendation engine draw people and cultural artifacts into surprising, generative meetings, or does it trap them in ever-narrower echo chambers? Does an autonomous weapon system relate to bodies and landscapes in ways that preserve openness and ambiguity, or does it reduce them to targets and collateral? Does a large language model allow new styles of thought and expression to emerge, or does it homogenize language toward predictable commercial patterns?

An OOO-derived ethics would therefore emphasize relational audits: systematic attempts to trace and evaluate the cascades of vicarious causation that radiate outward from any deployed AI. The goal is not perfect prediction (impossible under conditions of withdrawal), but the fostering of more vibrant, less violent, less reductive relational ecologies.
Humility and Coexistence

Object-Oriented Ontology does not deliver a ready-made rulebook for AI ethics. What it provides instead is an orientation: a disposition of humility before the autonomous reality of every object, including those we build; a refusal to collapse the world into human meanings or interests alone; and an attentiveness to the aesthetic and ethical qualities of the relations that actually exist rather than those we fantasize.

In an age when increasingly powerful intelligences are being woven into the fabric of reality, such an orientation may prove more valuable than any list of prohibitions or utilitarian calculations. It invites us to build, deploy, and live with AI not as masters commanding servants, nor as anxious regulators policing black boxes, but as cohabitants striving—however imperfectly—for relations that honor the withdrawn, inexhaustible strangeness of every object we encounter.

By taking seriously the idea that artificial intelligence is an object among objects, Object-Oriented Ontology helps us imagine an ethics adequate to a world that has never been—and will never be—centered exclusively on ourselves.
